Local SEO for Web Designers: How to Rank Any Client on Google Maps in 90 Days

Local SEO for Web Designers: 90-Day Playbook

If you're a web designer charging £40-£150/month for a managed site, local SEO is your highest-leverage retainer service. Get a plumber into the Maps 3-pack and they'll never leave you.

This is the exact 90-day local SEO playbook we use at Parsons Web Solutions.

Why local SEO is easier than national SEO

Local SEO has three signals only:

  1. Relevance, does Google know what you do?
  2. Distance, how close are you to the searcher?
  3. Prominence, how trusted is your business locally?

You can move all three in 90 days with the right work.

Days 1-7: Audit and foundation

Google Business Profile (GBP) audit

  • Claim and verify the profile
  • Primary category set correctly (the single biggest ranking lever)
  • 5-9 secondary categories that match real services
  • Full address, service area, opening hours
  • Phone number matching the website exactly
  • 10+ high-quality photos (interior, team, work, signage)
  • 3-5 service descriptions written with target keywords naturally

Website foundation

  • Add the business name, address, phone (NAP) to the footer of every page
  • Embed Google Maps on the contact page
  • Add LocalBusiness schema markup with full NAP
  • Build dedicated service-area pages (one per town you cover)

Days 8-21: Citations and consistency

A citation is any mention of your client's NAP on another website. Google uses them to verify the business is real and consistent.

Build citations on:

  • Yell, Thomson Local, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect
  • Industry directories (Checkatrade for trades, OpenTable for restaurants)
  • Local directories (council business listings, Chamber of Commerce)
  • Facebook and Instagram business pages

Use the exact same NAP everywhere, even a comma difference can hurt. Tools like BrightLocal or Whitespark speed this up.

Days 22-45: Reviews engine

Reviews are the single biggest local SEO lever after categories. Build a system:

  • Set up a one-tap review link (g.page/r/...)
  • Send the link by SMS or email within 2 hours of a completed job
  • Aim for 1 new review per week, minimum
  • Reply to every review (positive and negative) within 24 hours
  • Use customer name and service in your reply (signals to Google)

Clients with 50+ reviews and a 4.7+ average dominate the 3-pack.

Days 46-60: Local content

Google wants to see your client is the local authority. Publish:

  • A blog post per service area town ("Plumbing in Chelmsford" etc.)
  • A case study per major job
  • A locally-flavoured FAQ page
  • Local landing pages with embedded testimonials, photos and maps

Each page should have a unique H1, unique meta, and at least 800 words of useful local content.

Days 61-75: Local link building

Get links from:

  • Local newspaper online editions (sponsor a story or comment for a quote)
  • Community sponsorships (sports teams, school fairs)
  • Local Chamber of Commerce membership pages
  • Suppliers or partners who already rank locally
  • Local blogs and "best of [town]" listicles

Five strong local links beat 500 directory citations.

Days 76-90: Refinement and measurement

  • Monitor rankings with BrightLocal or Local Falcon (grid scan)
  • Track GBP insights, calls, direction requests, website clicks
  • Identify any drop in any signal and fix immediately
  • Refresh photos monthly (Google rewards activity)
  • Post a Google Update weekly (offer, news, photo)

The fastest wins (do these first)

  1. Fix the primary GBP category if it's wrong
  2. Add 20 photos in week one
  3. Get 10 new reviews in 30 days
  4. Add LocalBusiness schema to the homepage
  5. Make NAP identical across web, GBP, Facebook, Yell

Any one of these can lift you 5-10 positions if it's been neglected.

What we charge for this

We bundle local SEO into our £40/month web design subscription. For freelance designers, charging £150-£400/month per client for managed local SEO is a healthy market rate in the UK.
